It’s really easy to let life unravel us.
The last few weeks have been really hard for me. In some ways, they were amazing — I live-blogged the Oscars, for god’s sake! — but I lost what had thus far been my most significant writing gig, and instantly found myself struggling to make ends meet. I’ve also seen people who I value tremendously drift away from me, and sometimes, it all feels like a little too much.
This morning as I was making tea, I went to pick up the tea kettle…and the handle fell off in my hands. I instantly burst into tears. Was I so attached to the kettle? No, it was two years old and purchased for under $15 – but it also was the first thing I bought when I moved into my own apartment, and thus the one item I own that I consider symbolic of my independence.
It’s really easy to feel our lives unravel, and it’s not always for the most rational of reasons. I’ll get another job – and I still have a pretty solid roof over my head – and yet I’ve been feeling my self-worth propel on a downward course. And instantly, it changes everything — from how we look at ourselves in the mirror, to how we interact with other people.
Obviously, women throughout the universe have way bigger problems than me, and it’s so easy to let things explode. Just take one evening to watch the DVD of “Precious” and suddenly, you will realize just how not-bad you truly have it.
And I think we can feel better about our own world – whether it’s life, or money, or job stress – or a fun combo of all the above – to make a difference for someone else. To that end, Reese Witherspoon launched the The Avon Empowerment Fund’s infinity-themed Empowerment line of accessories and clothing, including a new Empowerment Ring and T-Shirt. 100% net profits from the sale of the bracelets, necklaces, rings and t-shirts (which range from $3 to $15) benefit efforts to eradicate domestic violence.
So, yes, money is a little tight for me right now – I won’t be recreationally ordering sushi takeout for a little while. But new opportunities are already abounding, and I’m leaving on a press trip to Cancun in the morning. Life isn’t so bad. And you know what? Ordering an empowerment ring (shown above) and knowing I am doing something to make someone else’s life — someone much less fortunate than me — better? It goes a long way toward making me feel like myself again.
Everything happens for a reason, things will turn around and be better than they were before. Many times people that you thought you couldn’t live without, you can live better without. People that you thought helped your life, really hindered your life. The glass is half-full not half-empty.
Well said, dear friend…well said 🙂 Enjoy your trip and have a mojito for me!
Wear things to remind you to be empowered!

Have a great trip to Cancun and keep the positive outlook!
I saw Precious this past weekend, and you’re right, you really don’t have it so bad. I have wondered after seeing that, how many people really have it that bad :(. Sad….
I love jewelry that is differently shaped. Really nice ring. 😉
Think empowered.
Very well said. I like the ring.
It is so important to stay positive and keep looking forward!! I bet you are feeling better now on your fab vacation!!! Enjoy!
i know i already commented on this post but I love the ring! It’s a simple ring with a big statement.
Having worked with domestic violence survivors and their children, I understand the sincere importance of this cause, firsthand. I’m so glad Reese Witherspoon is using her celebrity and style-sense to help.
Change is never easy, but I know you’re a survivor, too. You are very brave to face your transition to a different life, head-on. I think that ring could be symbolic of the start to this new stage in your life…not unlike your teapot.
If anybody is interested in getting this ring I have free shipping on your order of $5 with code SPRING2010.

I too find myself on the (what I like to call) “pity pot” and just like clockwork…something comes along to remind me how much worse things can/could really be. I have never ordered a lot from Avon but, what a great company. They are always finding ways to help women. Bravo!
Well said! Your worth is beyond measure and no gig dictates that!
I hope your trip is lifting your spirits. My motto is “An Attitude of Gratitude” so I always begin and end my day thinking of what I’m grateful for.
I’m sure the best is yet to come for you. I know how scary it can be to be suddenly a little less secure. This ring is a very pretty reminder that you’re strong enough to get through it.
Life is a series of peaks and valleys – the valleys exist to remind us of how lucky we are when we hit a peak. Don’t worry, things will get better for you soon 🙂
Sometimes we all need a hand-up when we’ve hit bottom. Thank God for my friends, who always seem to be there to make sure I don’t stay down for long. I think that the “Empowerment” line is a wonderful idea, not only because it helps others, but it also reminds you to keep going!
There’s always someine out there who has it worse than you do. I tell myself that when bad things happen to me. Things could be worse , right? Just count your blessings and have a great trip. 🙂 BTW-think I’ll get one of those rings.
That ring is beautiful. The purpose behind it is excellent as well!
wow i love this post it really makes u think.
