Most Amazing Night Ever: The Avon Foundation for Women Gala at Cipriani

Sometimes, working in beauty feels makes me feel a little bit shallow.

Every night, I go to events, often in the name of a beauty or style brand, and enjoy cocktails and canapes in the name of of a new innovation in frizz control of a new shade of lipstick.

I love my work, and I love my life — more than I can say — but sometimes, it becomes ever more apparent there is something so much greater out there we could be doing, and it’s a beautiful, humbling scene.

A few nights ago, I had the incredible honor of being invited to the 10th annual Avon Foundation for Women Gala, which honored exceptional champions for their efforts to end breast cancer and violence against women. The event, held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, has raised more than $20 million for Avon philanthropy in the decade since it launched.

I was a little starstruck. The event was hosted by Reese Witherspoon , award-winning actress and Honorary Chair of the Avon Foundation for Women, and Andrea Jung , Chairman and CEO, Avon Products Inc., with a special musical performance by Melissa Etheridge. For those not in the know, I’ve been a HUGE Reese fan since the Legally Blonde days. So, to finally meet her, and ON A PINK CARPET, no less, it garnered me speechless.

Do we not love her amazing Jason Wu dress? Or her fabulous legs? (She did participate in a mother-daughter triathlon with Ava last Sunday, that didn’t hurt!)

More than 550 guests attended and donated $2.2 million this year to benefit breast cancer research and access to care and domestic violence education, prevention and victim support programs. Along with Reese Witherspoon and Andrea Jung, presenters included incredibly hot Patrick Dempsey (and his wife, the fabulous Jillian) and Christy Turlington Burns, who has a waist I can wrap one hand around. Still.

“This is our very special tenth anniversary celebration where we honor extraordinary champions who are changing women’s lives, and salute their powerful contributions to women’s health and empowerment,” said Andrea Jung. “Through the generosity of our supporters, in addition to the grassroots efforts of millions of supporters around the world – including our Avon Sales Representatives, Associates, and customers – Avon is the world’s largest corporate philanthropy focused on issues that matter most to women.”
