Elevated Radiation Levels Found in Milk, Spinach Just 70 Miles North of Tokyo

Scientists have found elevated radiation levels in spinach and milk 70 miles from Tokyo. The Wall Street Journal reports that health officials are concerned that contamination from the leaking Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has entered the food chain.

The Japanese Health Ministry says it found iodine-131 in milk from a dairy farm that is located 50 kilometers from the leaking nuclear plant. Contamination of milk is especially dangerous because children drink it in larger amounts than adults. Japan drinks more milk in the past few years than it has in decades and dairy farms are increasing. Healthy Ministry official Ryusuke Hagiwara said, “This is the first time ever that an abnormal amount of radioactive material has been detected in food in Japan.”

Naturally the Japanese government is telling everyone that the food is fine and that the radiation levels are low. Consumers aren’t buying it for a minute. Other than Ann Coulter, no one thinks it’s a good idea to drink milk contaminated with radioactive iodine.
