Study Finds Some People Call in Sick Because They Can’t Face Their Commute!

A new survey commissioned by The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated and conducted by Harris Interactive reveals some interesting commuting trends. At least 4% of workers have called into work sick simply because they couldn’t face their commute. Here are some more findings from the survey.

  • 4% of adults who commute to work have called in sick to work because they couldn’t face their commute.
  • Few adults who commute to work – just 6% – are paid for the time they spend commuting.
  • 45% of adults who commute to work spend less than 30 minutes; 32% spend 30-59 minutes; and 16% spending one to less than two hours.
  • Everyone has their nightmare commuting story. 7% of adults who commute to work said their longest commute clocked in at five hours or more; 30% said it was more than two hours; and 31% said it was one to less than two hours.
  • 48% say commuting has a significant impact on job satisfaction, and 32% said they took the commute into consideration when they chose their current job. 15% said they would change jobs to shorten their commute, and 11% feel their commute negatively impacts their work-life balance.
  • Only 14% of adults who commute to work have the option of working from home. Of those not given the option, 27% said they feel that given the necessary technology, they could do so effectively.
  • 83% still travel to work by car alone. 11% use public transportation; 10% walk; and 9% carpool.
  • 76% percent of employed adult commuters listen to music on the radio or their own listening device. 22% keep it quiet; 18% talk on the phone or text; and 11% talk to their fellow passengers. Only 7% of people read a book or magazine, while 4% do work.
  • If they didn’t have to spend time commuting, the vast majority of adults who commute to work would be in bed. 55% said they would sleep later; 42% said they would relax; 33% said they would spend time with family; and 28% said they would exercise.

The above cartoon is from Time Well Spent, a weekly cartoon series sponsored by Kronos Incorporated that illustrates the humorous aspects of workforce management.
