World Health Organization Says Cell Phones Actually Can Cause Brain Cancer

For real. It wasn’t a myth after all.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that cell phones may cause cancer. It’s a very serious announcement — especially for those of us who sleep with our phones on our pillows! — which came after the organization reviewed many studies on the subject. The WHO now categorizes cell phone radiation in the “hazard” category which also includes lead, engine exhaust, and chloroform.

A large, international study that focused on cancer and cell phone usage in 2010, found that people who used a cell phone for ten years or more had double the rate of gliomas, a type of brain tumor. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that using a cellphone for 50 minutes produces a marked increase in activity in the brain.

Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center are quite concerned about cell phone usage in children. Children’s skulls and scalps are thinner than adults are, and their cells divide faster. This means that they are especially susceptible to radiation.
